Visual Terrain Brings Light to the H.L. Hunley exhibit
in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
August 20, 2004
Van Nuys, CA Visual Terrain Inc. is pleased to announce their participation as lighting designers for the recently opened H.L. Hunley Exhibit at Broadway at the Beach in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
According to Principal lighting designer Peter Maradudin, the approach to lighting the Hunley was to focus on the story. “As a theatrical designer, the very nature of designing a look that simulated the underwater environment was both intriguing and challenging. The goal was to light the exhibit as if you were inside the submarine under water. We chose a range of blue hues projected through various patterns and animated with movement.”
The Hunley challenge didn’t stop at the drawing table. Project Designer Matt Levesque was on site to oversee the installation of the design.
“Flexibility was the key to the success of the Hunley project. Within the exhibit space are both display cases and a multi-media show. Lighting had to be bright enough to view the visual material and, at the same time, dim enough to watch the show. With a combination of balance and isolation, we were able to accomplish both needs and still maintain the experience”, explained Levesque.
The H.L. Hunley exhibit is part of the largest festive entertainment complex in South Carolina. A 350-acre Broadway at the Beach entertainment, shopping and dining Complex created by Burroughs & Chapin Company, Inc of Myrtle Beach, SC.
