Visual Terrain Produces Roland and Rodgers’ Seventh Annual Organ Power Concert, “Back To Broadway”

Van Nuys, CA — For the fourth year Visual Terrain Inc. has successfully produced “Organ Power VII” for the Roland Corporation. This year’s theme of “Back To Broadway” was a live concert featuring 10 internationally acclaimed artists including Hector Olivera, Yuri Tachibana, Tony Fenelon and Rosemary Bailey featuring Roland and Rodgers products. Special guest star Davis Gaines performed “Music of the Night” from The Phantom of the Opera.

The event was held at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center in Long Beach, California on January 18 and 19, 2005. This year’s production was staged for the first time with live actors. The script written by Mark W. Gray, tells the story of two aspiring actors, Jenny and Buck. Their climb to stardom, weaves through the evening, laced together through the music of various Broadway shows.

Dawn Hollingsworth, Technical Producer, comments, “We are so fortunate to work with the staff at Roland. Over the last few years, our collaboration has allowed the show to evolve with respect to the entertainment value without sacrificing the product message. The artists loved our ideas and it showed in their performances.”

Organ Power VII brought about new challenges to Production & Lighting Designer, Matt Levesque. “In previous years the underlining theme was music and the product was the talent. This year, we recreated our own mini-Broadway musical with a strong theatrical theme in its own right and actors telling their story, while all the time showcasing the product. Subsequently, we had three very strong elements on stage simultaneously. The solution was to key light the musicians and the product while allowing for theatrical color to flow around the actors and the set.” explained Levesque.

Equally challenged was Set Designer Edward Marks who had his own requirements. “Organ Power is a major audio show so my first thought was to dress the set in speaker fabric which would allow for the un-interrupted flow of sound however, the material had to be transparent enough to take light and durable enough to withstand the function of creating a physical set piece. The answer was a combination of silk and scrim material.

This is the seventh annual production in association with other Roland activities surrounding The NAMM Show at the Anaheim Convention Center.
