On October 16, 2010, Art Center College of Design celebrated its 80th anniversary with a gala held at its Hillside Campus in Pasadena.

The gala, which raised funds for scholarships for Art Center students, commemorated the school’s distinguished 80-year history and also celebrated the ingenuity and integrity of its students, alumni and faculty.

Visual Terrain was invited to design the lighting for this event by Phil Hettema, The Hettema Group.

Phil attended Art Center and has been active at the school both as an instructor and on their Alumni Council. Together with Jim Yeager of Breakwhitelight Communications, The Hettema Group produced the gala Art Center event.

Commenting on the opportunity to design lighting for the event, Steven Young, Senior Project Designer for Visual Terrain said, “It was a pleasure to design for the Art Center, in the lush and idyllic setting, a colorful, magical evening was easily attained. The Art Center’s willingness to entertain unusual lighting ideas resulted in breathtaking vistas.”

Jen Goldstein, Lighting Designer and Programmer for the event, enjoyed the collaboration between the lighting design and projections. “It was fun to add movement to the event through the use of moving projectors and graphics provided by The Hettema Group.”

The funds raised from the event will be used to create named scholarships in recognition of the honored alumni, as well as support general scholarships for students in Art Center’s undergraduate, graduate and Public Programs. This support will enable Art Center’s students to fully realize their potential, regardless of their financial means.
